a florist’s guide to the wedding color palette

december 2022

Hello, it’s our all-time favorite topic & finally our chance to talk your ear off about it! In the age of ever-changing wedding trends and endless Pinterest feeds, choosing a color palette that feels true to you is no small ask. We’ve seen it all, so here’s a peek into the mind of a florist when it comes to color. Starting with general factors to consider, we’ll then move into the classic options, and finish with what’s on trend this season.

The 2023 color round-up.

Before diving into specific color swatches, first reflect on the big picture of your event. Consider the season, the wedding aesthetic, and what you want the colors to convey. Many couples let the season guide them. Spring is known for soft pastels, summer is full of bright pops of color, and fall moves into earth tones. Other clients are driven by the day’s energy. Is the aesthetic elegant, playful, bold, or delicate? Find your own words, and ask yourself what colors come to mind.

a good starting point

One way to nail your color palette is choosing beautiful shades of greenery that complement the flowers. The three categories of greenery are grey green, deep green, and yellow green. Grey green has been trending for quite some time; picture eucalyptus, dusty miller, and lamb’s ear. Deep green leans into the darker hues of ruscus, ivy, and jasmine, while yellow green includes hops and sword fern. These categories can certainly overlap, but we generally avoid pairing grey green with yellow green.

Now, let’s talk specific color combos!

think green(ery)

No matter the season or year, there is a color palette that will never go out of style. You guessed it: white and green. It may seem straightforward, but we’re always blown away by the variety within this pairing. Keep it pure white to stay crisp and bright, add blush to warm things, or lean into ivory to add depth and elegance. Then choose the greenery: sage green softens the palette, deep green is formal and classic, while yellow green is bright and festive. Mix and match, add accent colors, or keep it simple. We promise you can’t go wrong.

consider the classics

If white and green is off the table, it’s time to consider…well, everything else! It’s up to you: use those words that embody your day and think, “what colors tell our story?” There are no rules but usually vibrant colors feel lively, muddy colors feel elegant and moody, and pastels feel soft and delicate. Warm colors add a glow, while cool colors add sophistication. The options are endless! Sometimes, it’s as simple as choosing your favorite color or Pinterest bouquet.

the rest of the rainbow

We’re a big believer in choosing colors that feel true to you, but it’s always fun to see what’s trending for inspiration. This year, you’re going to see lots of emerald green (i.e. velvet jackets, table runners, and endless deep greenery). Consider pairing this with blush, blues, or metallic accents.

Lavender is also coming in hot, including the herb itself. Up the sophistication with slightly moodier “complex” purples.

Big pops of color will be making an appearance, especially in monochromatic fuchsia, yellow, or bright orange.

Finally, our beloved earth tones are back for another season: terra cotta, quicksand roses, hints of tan, and earthy greenery.

on trend in 2023

We hope this made a big (and exciting) decision feel a bit smaller. Remember that your florist is a color expert! It’s our favorite thing to talk about, so don’t feel the need to have it all figured out before we meet. The beautiful part is that it’s a hard thing to mess up, so just do what feels right.

most importantly, let it be fun
